Volvo announced its intention to put a 112-mph speed limiter on all cars moving forward last year. Today, the company announced it would actually be following through with that goal. Going forward, all 2021 model year Volvos will be permanently limited to 112 mph.
Spokesman Jim Nichols confirmed to Road & Track that there will be no way for normal customers to remove the limiter, regardless of whether the vehicle is on a normal street, the Autobahn, or a race track. It will be capped at 112 mph permanently, barring extreme edge uses.
“It can be removed only in special cases where there is a clear purpose, such as for police cars,” a Volvo spokesperson told The Verge back in 2019.
