New spy photos of 2021 Navara got us confused
Last week, our friends over at Headlight Mag gave us our first look at what could be the 2021 Nissan Navara. Though the changes were quite extensive especially with the bumper and grille, the popular pick-up truck was noticeably missing its signature LED daytime running lights (DRL) which Nissan showed during the 13 car teaser earlier this year. Unfortunately, there were also no photos of the rear or interior. Fortunately, that’s about to change.
Thanks to Headlight Mag once again, it seems we might be looking at the top-of-the-line 2021 Navara this time around. New spy photos have emerged of the facelifted Navara, and unlike the first one, this set appears to show the Navara’s new signature LED DRL. Better yet, we also get a peek at the truck’s revised rear.
Based on the new photos, the difference between this Navara and the previous one we saw appear to only be the headlights and wheels. The new bumper and larger grille inspired by the Titan could be shared for the new 2021 model. The new headlights with a two-tier LED DRL and quad projectors give the truck a more modern appearance.
A closer look at the uncamouflaged front end does reveal something interesting about this facelifted Navara. The top part of the grill appears to show the words “FRONTIER”; a name we have not heard in the Southeast Asian region for a long time. This won’t be the only time the Frontier name can be seen on Nissan’s updated pick-up truck though.
At first glance, the rear appears mostly unchanged apart from the new LED taillight signature. However, the tailgate itself has been heavily revised and now features stamping on the tailgate similar to most full-size US pick-up trucks. Interestingly, it reads “FRONTIER” too instead of “NAVARA” just like the grille. Talk about confusing, right?
It’s curious why Nissan would stamp Frontier on the grille and tailgate of the Navara instead of, well, Navara for the 2021 model. Could we be looking at the 2021 Frontier instead? Will the Frontier name become a trim level in Thailand and nearby regions? Or will Nissan actually bring back the Frontier nameplate in the ASEAN region for this 2021 model? With no official announcement yet, all we can do is speculate for the time being.
Do remember that the Frontier name has long been dropped from the region. However, when the previous-generation truck was first launched it was called the Frontier Navara. The name was then changed to Navara only for the region, and now it is officially called the NP300 Navara. Meanwhile, the Frontier name has been retained for North America as they still offer the previous-generation model there.
Nissan has yet to announce when the 2021 Navara/Frontier will officially debut. Considering the pick-up truck is built in Thailand, expect it to make its global launch there. Based on the increase in spy photos, we bet the launch will happen soon.
