A Bloomberg report suggests that Tesla Inc, headed by Elon Musk, has begun the process of hiring top level executives in India, for positions pertaining to HR, marketing and sales among others.
The fact that now Tesla officially has presence in India, one of the largest automobile markets in the world is old news. Tesla registered its subsidiary is Bengaluru and is likely to set up its India headquarters in Mumbai, with assembly and manufacturing operations likely to be based out of Karnataka. According to the document filed with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatrangam Sreeram, and David Jon Feinstein have been named as directors. The company is moving ahead full steam and has already had a round of hiring and now Tesla is looking to hire a head for HR along with a head for marketing and sales department, according to a Bloomberg report.
In the previous round of hiring, Manuj Khurana was appointed as Head – Policy and Business Development for India operations, while Prashanth Menon, who has been with Tesla for four years, was appointed the country CEO. The company also hired Nishant Prasad as Charging Manager who will head Tesla’s supercharging, destination charging and home charging business. He was earlier head of Charging Infrastructure and Energy Storage at Ather Energy. And finally, Tesla India appointed Chithra Thomas as its country HR Leader, who was earlier working at Walmart and Reliance Retail.
Tesla’s entry into India has been timed well, with a host of premium electric cars like Mercedes-Benz EQC, Jaguar I-Pace already on sale and the likes of Audi e-Tron and Volvo XC40 confirmed for a launch this year. While India has been slow to adapt to electric vehicles, with EVs forming less than one per cent of total vehicles sales in India, the coming of Tesla could have a positive impact for the EV segment in the country.
The Bloomberg report also suggests that Tesla is closely monitoring the developments with regards to EV policy and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) along with the production-linked incentive (PLI) program, ahead of beginning sales operations in the right earnest.
